Cagle Campground

Last year on New Year’s Eve I looked up just in time to see a bald eagle fly over my backyard. I’ve lived here for fifteen years and have never seen a bald eagle. I’d heard rumors, of course, that they could be spotted around the Lake Conroe area, but even then, I figured it was an unlikely sighting.

Fast forward a year to this January, I’m standing outside on break at work and I see a young bald eagle soar right over my head. I’m just in absolute awe of my own backyard right now. I mean, I worked in Yellowstone National Park for six months and saw one maybe two bald eagles that entire season. It’s just unbelievable to me.

I researched the Internet for the best place to see them, and found a small campground at the northern tip of Lake Conroe. Located in the Sam Houston National Forest, Cagle Campground is about a thirty minute drive from my house. We loaded up the dogs and headed out, just a day trip to scout the area and check out the tent camping for a later time.

I hopped out of the car, looked up, and, dadgum, that’s a bald eagle!

We spent the day hiking around with the dogs and watching the skies, absolutely ecstatic each time we saw one.

I think we even found a nest. To the left of me in the above pic, we saw, what looked to be, an eagle in a nest. The one we kept seeing flying around stayed relatively close to this area. Next time, we are bringing binoculars!

We stayed until sunset and then headed back to town for some Chinese food. It was a much-needed day trip.

Once the weather warms up a little bit, we plan on tent camping for a couple of nights. The mission is simple: look for eagles by day and Bigfoot by night.
